Best Album Covers

To me, the packaging is a huge part of any album. This is also one of the main reasons I haven’t been able to embrace digital downloads. The artwork helps enhance the mood of the album, and is supposed to reflect the image of the band and the different albums.

I really enjoy reading the lyrics, recording info, credits etc while listening to albums. I have tried to make a list of some of my favourite album covers, but they are in no specific order. Let me know if you agree or not!

Behemoth -The Apostacy

There’s really no doubt that this is a blackened death metal album is there? I mean, you don’t expect anything else but double bassdrums and demonic vocals when you look at this album cover. I’ve always wanted the statue on the cover to be in front of my house. That’d keep the Jehova’s Witness away, wouldn’t it?

Bjork - Homogenic

Homogenic is Bjorks most klinical sounding album, and the artwork really reflects that. I love the almost inhuman look on her on the cover, and the sterile background colors.

Circa Survive - On Letting Go

I love all of Circa Survive’s album covers. They are done by an artist called Esao Andrews, and are all stellar!

Demdike Stare - Elemental

This is one of the most impressive packages I’ve seen. They have used art by  Andy Votel and made a four page fold out where you can insert the four different LPs into the respective folders. Remarkable!

Gojira - From Mars To Sirius

This cover is just sick. I actually have a tattoo based on this album cover, that’s how much I love it! The album is great too.

Julien-K - Death To Analog

I actually won this LP after entering a remix-contest of the track Kick The Bass. There’s really no doubt that this is an electro album by looking at the artwork. The fold out vinyl edition is just awesome.

Ladytron - Gravity The Seducer

Really iconic art work. Reminds me of the 80’s and Bowie, Peter Gabriel and the rest.

Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals

This is just a really provocative album cover. It really capturers the mood of the album, and enhances the inhuman and sterile vibe in the songs.

Mayhem - Dawn of the Black Hearts

Needless to say, this album is banned in most countries around the globe. The Norwegian band used a picture of when they found their lead singer,Dead, dead in his apartment after cutting his own wrists and blowing his brains out with a shotgun. It doesn’t get more metal than this!

Mötley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood

A legendary album cover from the kings of The Sunset Strip. Really sums up what 80’s heavy metal was all about.

Nirvana - Nevermind

Legendary band. Legendary album. Legendary album cover. Nuff said.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica

Proof that modern artists still care about packaging in this digital age.  The cover is an illustration by Virgil Finlay from the pulp magazine Weird Tales. It depicts a vampire looking at himself in a mirror.

A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

My absolute favourite APC album. Like all of APCs albums, the artwork is done by Steven R Gilmore. This guy is one of my favourite cover designers, and has made all of the album covers to Skinny Puppy, Static X and many others.

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

This album cover says it all! It’s hard not to get that this band is political, and the music is angry.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

One of my all-time favourite albums. The album cover is just as epic as the album itself.

Tool - 10 000 days

The 3D art on this album is just out of this world. Not a big fan of the band, but I love the visuals they provide in packaging, videos and on stage.

There you, just a few album covers I love, off the top of my mind.

Most anticipated albums of 2012

So we’re a few months into the new year, and allready alot of cool albums have been released. The albums that have caught my attention so far are Demdike Stare's Elemental, The Big Pink's Future This as well as Burial's new EP Kindered.

I’ve allready covered all three albums earlier, so I’m gonna focus on upcoming releases in this post. Here are a few of my favourites that have been anounced so far this year:

The XX

The XX hit the underground scene like a pimps flat hand hits the face of a hooker on a Saturday night. Their debut blew the mind of critics, hipsters, rockers as well as your average electrohead. The East-Londoners plan to release their sophomore album by the time they start touring the festivals this summer, and have stated that the album will be influenced by the club-scene.

Swedens math-metal champions are set to release their eight full lenght in March titled Koloss. The metalheads have yet to prove they are capable of releasing a shitty record, and judging by the two songs that have been leaked so far, they still aren’t. This highly anticipated follow-up to 2008’s Obzen will most likely be amongst the top metal-releases this year.

Bloc Party

The british indie heroes were long rumored to have split up, and lead man Kele's solo records added fuel to the fire. Right before x-mas the band started hinting they had started recording their follow up to 2008's Intimacy. The band have stated that they are aiming for a fall release.

Death metal’ers all over the world held their breath as Nergal, lead man of polands death metal kings Behemoth, struggeled to beat leukemia. Thankfully Nergal won the battle, and stated that he was more motivated than ever to get back in the studio and back on the road. Behemoth are most likely to release the follow-up to 2009’s Evangelion at the end of the year.

White Ring

Spooky NYC duo White Ring released the EP Black Earth That Made Me late last year, and made their mark as a force to be reckoned with in the Witch House-scene. The band are touring as we speak, and they are aiming to release their first full-lenght by the end of the year.

Gojira took everyone by surprise when they hit the extreme-metal scene with From Mars to Sirius back in 2005. Formed in Bayonne, France, the band caught everyone’s attention with their hard-hitting riffs and clinical beats. Max Cavalera was so impressed that he recruited lead singer Joe Duplantier to play bass on Cavalera Conspiracy's debut album Inflikted in 2008. Gojira have been locked up in a studio in New York for a while now, and reports say their album will be out this summer.

Sigur Ros

The most depressing band in the world plan to release a follow-up to 2008’s Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust this spring. Needless to say; expectations are high. Few bands capture the sound of the Nordics like Sigur Ros, and after releasing five masterpieces allready, suicidal teens are jumping off buildings awaiting Jonsi and the rest of the band to release a teaser.

Witch House phenomenon oOoOO plan to release a new EP Our Loving is Hurting Usin early April. The track NoWayBack featuring Butterclock have allready been leaked confirming that the EP will live up to 2010’s self titled EP.

Silversun Pickups

California based alt rockers Silversun Pickups are releasing their new album Neck of the Woods on May 8th. The quartet blew up instantly and have had massive sucess with their two albums Carnavas from 2006 and 2009’s Swoon. The first single is said to be Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings) and is expected to hit radio stations any day now.

Alot of bands are rumored to plan a release later this year, and worth mentioning are;Alice In Chains, Deftones, The Smashing Pumpkins, Salem, Tool and How To Destroy Angelsto name a few.

Did I leave anyone out? Feel free to leave a comment!

Vinyl Heaven!

Just received the final 4th piece of Demdike Stare´s Elemental series, titled Iris. This has got to be one of the most amazing packaging I have ever seen from an artist. (My camera doesn´t do it justice).

Together with that order was the Tryptych CD, as I was shit out of luck finding the vinyl edition… If anyone knows somewhere online for me to buy it, let me know!

Suspicious drone…

Yup, it´s Demdike Stare I´m referring to. I bought their album Symbiosis about a year ago, and I´ve been hooked ever since. As a former fan of the black industrial genre, I was definitely taken on a trip down memory lane as I indulged in Demdike Stares dark universe. Bands like Mz. 412 and the rest of the Cold Meat Industries family came to mind as the opening track hounted my headset.

This week I finally received Elemental 1 & 2 and Elemental 3. These albums are a part of a four-part LP series on limited coloured vinyl. The first parts are orange and purple, and the third is on red vinyl. The fourth part of the Elemental  series is relased TODAY, and is limited to 1000 copies like the previous releases of the Elemental  series.

Elemental 1 & 2

Elemental 3

These albums sound both organic and machine-like at the same time. The tracks are built upon hypnotic and pulsating beats, and are covered in atmospheric and nightmaresque soundpatterns.

If you´re into drone/chill/witch house you´re in for a treat!
